It was almost a perfect night! The racing was sensational, the program was flying along with a good rhythm and the atmosphere was electric. That was until Division 2’s Round 3 event when an unfortunate fall saw 6 riders crash. I have heard back from most of them and they have indicated that they are OK. An extra thought for Liam Melville who will have to make a quick recovery for this weekend’s NSW state junior Championships where he is considered one of the favourites.
Once again last Friday’s racing attracted a large number of FNWTR first timers who were spread throughout the 5 divisions. Many of them chose Division 5 which is the lowest grade. Although Div 5 is not necessarily the slowest grade it is, however, the grade with smallest field. We specifically ensure that this grade never has more than 9 riders to give the beginning riders that little bit of extra room to move.
The Feature race of the night was The Rebel Sport / Pearl-Izumi Junior Wheel-Race.
Entry to this race was strictly by birth year - 1991 (16 years) to 1994 (13 years). Handicaps were awarded on age and gender basis only! Hence the 16 year old boys were all off Scratch, whilst the 13 year old girls were off a handy 230m. The field had a cap of 20 riders; luckily we had 19 riders which avoided the tears if I had to tell any starry eyed kids that they could not start J
Before the race there was a lot of speculation as to how the race would pan out. Two names were repeatedly mentioned in these conversations, Law and McManus. The first name, Law, actually referred to two riders: Scott Law, 16 years (0m) and Jackson Law, 14 years (110m). Both of the Law brothers are multiple national champions and both are holders of national records. The surname Law has been a fixture of national level racing results for over two decades now (father Grant Law). It is my belief that the surname will become synonymous with Australian international results in the near future.
The race started with a blistering pace and it wasn’t long into the 1.25km event that the race would be won by either Tirian McManus, 13 years (210m) and Jackson Law. With two laps to go Tirian had a huge lead however Jackson was closing the gap quickly passing riders almost effortlessly. Coming into the final lap Jackson’s bid for the win became an impossible task as Tirian stepped it up a notch to take a comfortable victory. Scott Harding, 14 years (110m) rode well to overcome Emma Sprouster, 14 years (180m) in the final metres.
I personally believe this handicap system was a great concept and well worth repeating next year. I would make a few adjustments. 1. Increase the distance to 1.75km (makes the race more tactical and gives the scratch markers more chance.) 2. Increase the girls handicaps (the handicaps were not to bad but I felt the girls needed a little more) 3. Have some form of qualifying (this may be done in the form of a TT during Junior Development with Lionel Cox) Many thanks to the sponsors: Rebel Sports Bankstown, who offer 10% off all cycling gear to FNWTR supporters and 20% off Pearl-Izumi clothing.
Round 3’s Win’n’Out race may be new to some but is an exciting sprinters event for FNWTR regulars. The key tactic is: if you go to win a sprint, you make sure you win it. All the races were action packed especially Div 2. All riders involved in the fall are reported to be stiff but OK.
The Mystery race is another tactical race. The Division 1 event was won by a superb tactical ride by the Jade Kitchen team. In this race, no-one (bar the bell ringer) knows the length of the race. There are two common tactics. Firstly, stay near the front in preparation of the bell to launch an explosive sprint. This tactic was adopted by Jade Kitchen’s Scott Law with Jackson Law leading him for the first 6 potential sprints. The second tactic is to anticipate the bell with a sneaky sprint prior to the bell. This was done almost to script by Jade Kitchen’s Grant Law and Alex Carver. On Lap 15, the duo started their pre-organised move off the back of the field. It took almost an entire lap but coming into lap 16 Grant Law was flying around the outside to receive the bell indicating 1 lap to go. At this point Alex Carver launched himself into the lead and no-one could catch him. Precision racing with pin point accuracy!
Next week is the last Friday of the month which means Madison night! I also believe that the feature race will be The Cycling Projects Div 1 Wheel-Race but stay tuned to the Wednesday night news letter. The Maersk Logistics / CNSW Time Blaster will be hard to beat at 8minutes and 54 seconds A special note for video fans: The video footage of The Rebel Sport/ Pearl Izumi Junior Wheel-Race was not that spectacular however, the footage of the Div 2 Win’N’Out crash was. On Monday night I will have the video up for public viewing. Two ways to find it go to the FNWTR website and use the links or go to You Tube and do a search on FNWTR.
