With NSW state road titles pending this weekend it was expected that numbers may be down this Friday night. The loyal crew and as well as 8 newbies, took to the boards to participate in what proved to be an exciting night for participants and spectators alike. The Feature race for the Night was The Veloflex Tyres 1.5km Wheel-Race for Div 1. The 15 rider field was competing for a first prize of a set of Veloflex Pave tyres. Limit on this race was Jock Murray at 130m with three riders, Jason Roberts, Alex Bird and Anthony Bennett, lining up on the scratch mark
Immediately from the start, a group of three formed at the front, Jock Murray, Glen Elton and Grant Fraser. At the back of the field the three scratchies worked superbly to cross quickly on to the back of the now compact bunch after 2 laps.
A quick check to the front revealed some alarming facts. First, the group of three had increased it’s lead from 20m to about 50m over the compact bunch. Secondly the three riders were all members of the Central Coast Cycling Club. After three laps Jock Murray pulled off the front leaving Glen Elton to lead out the captain of the group Grant Fraser. The tactic worked splendidly and Fraser held on easily to win the race.
The main field had slowed over the final 3 laps which left a big bunch sprint for third place. David Willmott used inspired tactics in addition to his renowned blistering speed to win the final sprint and narrowly miss passing Glen Elton to place second.
The savvy FNWTR competitors happily pointed out that the handicapper (that’s me) is a member of the Central Coast Club. Their point was well made, however, in my defence, I identified that the small number of starters equated to some large gaps in the handicap. Had the full field turned up the race would have had more chance to resemble a scratch race.
Round 3’s Half Field sprints allowed for fields of up to 10 riders to compete over 4 laps which suited the sprinters perfectly.
Round 4’s endurance race was spectacular. The lower grades participated in the infamous Madi-lead. The Madi –lead always results in a true endurance champion as it becomes a race of attrition. Only the toughest actually make it to the finish and the sprint is more like a drag to the finish.
The div 1 riders lined up for the month ending Madison. Normally, I sing the praises of our Div 1 Madison riders who show brilliant handling skills, speed and tactics in a thoroughly exciting display of racing. This month’s race certainly was exciting however, about half the field left their brilliant handling skills at home. The final race result was team Herrmann and Bennett taking the victory in a break away with Fraser and Stock. Instead of writing a detailed report of the race I thought I would add some quotes.
Commentator just after the winning breakaway. “The race win is up there but I am watching Neil Skipper, he’s far more interesting.” David Brown mid race: “What the f#$% are you doing” Neil Skipper post race: “I learnt more in that one race then I have in the last 5 years.”
Our monthly Madisons are always exciting and are run on the last Friday of each month. August’s Madison will be the last of the 2007 series. The final event for the night was the Maersk Logistics + CNSW Time Blaster. This is an event where competitors can win $100 so long as they win the event in a time under the previous record. The record stood at 8:54 for the 7.5km set by Joel Stewart.
The first time check after 10 laps revealed that the bunch was 7 seconds down on schedule. After 20 laps the dwindling bunch had clawed back 3 seconds to be 4 down. Coming into the last laps Anthony Bennett made a desperate attack with Mitchell Stock glued to his wheel. Bennett rode strongly to hold off Stock but unfortunately the clock time was 8:57 which meant no money for the Lidcombe rider.
Next weeks Wheel-race will again be sponsored by Cycling Projects and Veloflex tyres. The racing will be red hot with round 4 being the calculating Point’a’Lap. Round 3 will be another interesting event in that each division will be equally split into 2 groups for an Italian pursuit. The winning team will acquire 3 points for their efforts.
Till then, stay off the drugs Paul
