Friday Night Winter
Track Racing
The Feature race of the night was The Veloflex Tyres 1.5km Wheelrace for Div 2 The limit marker was the experienced master Hugh Gray (110m), whilst scratch was occupied by Ben Harvey and Michael Hickman. It was apparent from very early on that Hugh was going to have no part in a 1.5km flat out effort as he was clearly waiting for some help in the early stages. By lap three the whole bunch had converged into what could now be described as a Scratch race.
Over the top of the large field came Scott Harding with his team mate Tirian McManus firmly planted on his wheel. The duo flew off the front and only Garry Mandy was wise enough to latch on to the express train. Adriano Maradini found his way out of the compact group and gave chase to the leading trio joining them to make a four man break.
With 1 ˝ laps remaining Tirian came around his team mate followed by Mandy and Maradini and this would become the final result as neither rider was strong enough to come around the speedy youngster.
It is a rare occurrence when you get to see a world class athlete and that is exactly what we all were privileged to see on Friday. Jaymie Paris rides in the CP3 category for the AWD (Athletes with Disability) Class. She was making an unofficial attempt on the AWD World 500m TT record. The record is held by BARBARA BUCHAN (USA) at 49"916 set in UCI AIGLE (SUI), World Cycling Centre 13.09.2006
Jaymie was using FNWTR to get some “under pressure” training, which will be vital as she challenges for the World title later this year in Bordeaux, France. Jaymie’s time of 49.19 which equates to 0.72 under World Record time was more than enough to fill her with confidence on her way to representing Australia in Bordeaux.
A FNWTR specialty is our Italian pursuits. In this event competitors in Div 1, 2 and 3 are divided equally amongst 4 teams. The riders line up in ability order with the weakest at the front and strongest at the back. Each rider does a full lap at the front and then pulls out. If done correctly, the pace of your team is constantly increasing as you race an opposing team on the opposite side.
On each occasion the race came down to the final riders of each team in an amazing spectacle in which the lead changed many teams. Congratulations to team captains Gavin White and Jason Roberts who successfully guided their stallions through many potential pitfalls on the way to victory.
The round four Point’a’Lap race featured differing styles of racing. In division 4 Michael Docker decided to go for the first sprint and then kept on going to win a total of 5 points. At this stage he sat up to see if anyone else would emulate his feat over the last 5 sprints. No individual was able to win all the remaining points and Docker scored a comfortable win.
In Div 3 Michael Hawkes sprinted for some early points but faded in the middle section of the race only to recover for the final two sprints where he secured the win.
Scott Law won the Division 1 race by waiting in the bunch as many riders fought out the tiring sprints in front of him. With 4 laps remaining Scott launched an attack that no one could follow and consequently picked up the remaining points to win.
The round 5 combined scratch races signaled the return to some normality into the FNWTR with each race finishing with a solid field sprint.
Next week will feature one of the biggest Wheel Races in the history of FNWTR, the TWE Wheels 2km Wheel-race. The top 5 of each division will be eligible for this magnificent event.
It will also be our monthly Derny night, meaning the motor bike will be fueled up and ready to lead the Kierins and the infamous Miss’n’Out Pointscores. Added to all this will be the nail biting Maersk logistics + CNSW Time Blaster. The time to beat is set at 8 minutes 54 seconds.
