Aside from the actual crop, I think it's worth growing sweetcorn just for the impressive towering plants.
Sweetcorn likes a long hot growing period, with plenty of food and water. It's a big feeder, so dig in lots of manure and other organic matter prior to planting.
Sow seeds directly in furrows about half a metre apart, as soon as it's consistently warm in spring. Thin seedlings to about 40cm apart. Sweetcorn needs to be grown in blocks to assist with pollination.
Once the seedlings are big enough, mulch right up to the stem, preferably with compost. Keep mulching.
Provide lots of water and feed regularly with a good organic liquid fertiliser.
Sweetcorn is ready to harvest when the silks are dry and brown.
You can grow pumpkins on the edges of your sweetcorn patch and let the vines grow between the sweetcorn plants.
