Globe Artichokes

Globe artichokes are a type of thistle and produce edible flower heads, which have become quite a sought after delicacy.

Plant seedlings in rich, well drained soil, in full sun and mulch well. Protect the shallow roots in winter from frost. The flower heads should be harvested when about the size of a tennis ball for a good quality feed.

Globe artichokes can grow for several years and should be propagated by separating suckers from the parent plant.

If you have a good globe artichoke recipe let me know and I'll put it in the recipes section of this site.

NOTE: Jerusalem artichokes are a totally different type of plant. The plant resembles a sunflower and produces edible tubers. I've heard them referred to as fartichokes for the digestive effect they're said to have.
