Fantastic in soups and stews, leeks are well worth growing in your backyard organic garden.
Leeks can be grown all year round but I find that a warm season crop will grow much faster than a winter crop.
Grow seedlings in punnets, pots or in clumps direct in your veggie patch for transplanting when large enough (6 to 8 inches long).
Make a hole in the soil about 6 inches deep and drop the seedling into the hole. It's not necessary to backfill. Just water the crop and enough soil will be washed into the hole to cover the roots. Eventually watering will fill the hole anyway. Make sure the seedling is long enough that it doesn't become completely covered with soil.
Leeks enjoy the occasional organic liquid feed and are ready to harvest in about 3 to 5 months depending on the growing season.
