The white worms, or entrachyadids, are not baby earthworms, but are useful bedfellows. They will certainly appear when kitchen peelings start to predominate the worm's food supply. To control them, lure them with a slice of moist bread for easy removal.
Over ripe fruit and fruit peelings attract these tiny flies, which are irritating but do no real harm. Bury any fruit waste or meat under the bedding and then fit a tight cover over it to stop the flies from entering and breeding.
Protein supplements help build the strength and size of the worms. Worms are most active at 15 to 25 degrees Celsius, so insulation in cool climates is important.
Look under 'Worm Farms' in the Yellow Pages for suppliers of compost worms, or visit your favourite plant nursery.
