Food

There is a feeder containing wheat and layer pellets, but given the choice, chooks would prefer to scratch for their food so we toss wheat around the garden for them too. Apparently it's delicious!

They eat most of our vegetable and bread scraps but are not keen on raw potato, onion or citrus scraps. They also spend hours foraging in the garden for treats. Friends often donate their kitchen scraps to the cause.

Winter can be a bit lean in the garden so it's important to keep the food supply up. Sometimes I microwave potato peelings for them, and the occasional warm damper straight from the oven is a big winner with them during cold weather.

Chickens need a good supply of water, and are fussy about water freshness. Ours have a water bottle in their house, which is changed every couple of days, and a bowl of water by the garden tap is filled daily.
