Heather's chook house

Housing

Our chickens live in a small tin shed with nesting boxes made of wooden packing cases. There is also a horizontal pole about 1 meter off the ground for those who prefer to roost. The straw is changed regularly to ensure they always have a warm dry bed. All that straw and poo is great for compost.

The tin shed is surrounded by a chicken wire enclosure about 8m2. The roof is also enclosed by chicken wire as a safety precaution because we have lost several chickens to predators.

We have 8 chooks at the moment, 2 Barnevelder hens with rooster, and 4 Silkie hens with rooster. Now that mating season is here the roosters aren't getting on too well, so we'll be separating the breads to preserve peace and order. Expect to see some photos of the new chook house in the near future.
