Comfrey re-emerging in spring

Comfrey

Comfrey is an attractive ornamental plant, with large dark green leaves. I use it as an additive to my compost or directly on the veggie patch as a great mulch. It can also be used to make liquid fertilizer, and it makes a great border to the veggie patch to control twitch, sorrel and buttercups from running into the beds.

It will grow in most soils but prefers a moist, well drained soil. Cut it back two to three times during the summer for great arm fulls of mulch - it self composts like a breeze. When it dies back in winter the weeds stop growing too.

Propagate by root division at any time of year.

Many people have used comfrey as a staple vegetable but it is now feared that the plant contains some cancer causing agents. My family doesn't eat it.
