Plant bulbs in pots

An easy and enjoyable way to start growing flowers is by planting bulbs, like daffodils or jonquils, in a pot.

Many bulbs need to spend some time in cold soil for them to flower well, so plant bulbs during autumn and leave them outside until they start to flower. Then you can bring them inside.

You'll need a pot at least 15cm deep, some potting mix and a bulb (you can put more than one bulb in a pot but don't cram them in).

Start off by placing a 5cm layer of potting mix into the pot. Then place the bulb in the pot, making sure that the bulb is placed the right way up. Quite often you'll see some of last years roots still on the bulb. If so, you'll know that that's the bottom of the bulb. If you're not sure, ask Mum or Dad.

Next, cover the bulb with more potting mix, right to the top of the pot. Place the pot in a sunny or slightly shady position in the back yard, and water it well. The potting mix should be kept moist but don't let it get soggy or the bulb may rot. You shouldn't let the potting mix dry out either.

Leaves will start to shoot in spring, followed by the flower stem and then the flowers. Now you can bring the pot inside so you can enjoy and admire the flower that you have grown yourself. Place the pot in a bowl near a window, perhaps in your bedroom.

After a while the flowers will die down and the leaves will begin to dry out. This is when the pot should be put back outside. Always let the leaves die down completely before removing the bulb from the pot and storing it in a cool dry place.

In autumn you can replant the bulb but it's best to plant it in the ground for a couple of years before planting in a pot again.
