Rub butter into sifted flour, sugar and cinnamon. Mix together with beaten egg. Divide mixture in half. Press 1 half into bottom of greased cake tin and put the other half aside.
Peel, core and coursely chop the apples and place them, along wth the cloves and sugar, into a saucepan. Bring to the boil and allow to simmer for just one minute. Remove from heat.
Remove the cloves from the stewed apples and spread the apples over the mixture already in the base of the tin. Sprinkle the other half of the flour mixture over the apples but don't press the mixture down.
Bake at 180°C for 45 minutes or until golden brown on top.
Finish with a light sprinkle of icing sugar.
