Handy tips for January

Midsummer is here and so is the need for plenty of water in the backyard organic garden. Don't let soil around fruit trees and vegetables dry out.

Sow the last crop of beans and sweetcorn. You might also risk some pumpkin seeds but time is short for sowing any of these crops. Pumpkin seedlings may be a better idea than seeds. Zucchini seedlings can go in too. Also sow brassica (broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower), silverbeet, lettuce and carrots seeds. You can also plant brassica, silverbeet and lettuce seedlings but watch carefully for wilting and keep the soil moist.

Mulch heavilly at this time of year especially around sweetcorn and tomatoes. The mulch will prevent evaporation and attract worms.
