Handy tips for March

By now you may have some bare ground in the veggie garden. Unless you have plans to plant in these areas, why not sow a green manure crop. This crop can be knocked over around spring time and dug in to the soil to provide valuable organic matter. Legumes in the crop will also provide nitrogen to the soil through nodules on their roots.

March is the last month to plant brassica seedlings. Feed them well to get them growing quickly before really cool weather sets in. Also start planting English spinach and sow a final crop of spring onions. Keep an eye on weeds among the carrot seedlings and get rid of them as soon as they appear. Also thin out carrot seedlings leaving a 5 to 10cm space between each seedling.

Prune all of your stone fruit trees if you haven't done so already. Any late fruiting trees can be pruned immediately after harvest.

Make sure all waste from harvested crops is composted including inedible fallen fruit.
