Many people see this time of year as a rest period in the backyard but there are still many useful jobs you can be doing.
Your soil will have cooled down considerably by now and if you've finished harvesting your crops, you could let the chooks clean up the veggie patch and fertilise it at the same time in preparation for next spring, or for planting onions and garlic during the next few months.
Continue making compost year round. If you have no use for it during the colder months, then stockpile it for spring.
Sow seeds of English spinach direct in rows about 30cm apart but don't let the chooks near them. Thin to the strongest seedlings so plants are spaced about 30cm apart. It is a short-lived plant, so keep planting during autumn and winter for a continuous crop.
If you have winter brassicas growing, give them an organic foliar feed to give them a kick-start before winter. If you still want to plant brassicas, do it quick and make sure you plant the right variety for this cold time of year.
You could start preparing planting holes now for new deciduous fruit trees.
