Warm weather is with us and as always there's plenty to do in the backyard organic garden.
Your soil should be nice and warm by now, so get mulching, especially around young seedlings. This will feed the soil, suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Also mulch around your fruit trees if you haven't already done so.
In the veggie garden the sun loving plants can go in like tomatoes, capsicums, sweetcorn, beans and the cucurbit family ie; zucchini, pumpkin, and cucumber. Also sow some sunflower seeds to grow a treat for the chooks. Get some more lettuce, spring onions and silver beet in the ground, and sow basil seeds near the tomatoes. If you have potatoes growing hill the soil up over the stems of the plants to prevent sunlight reaching the young tubers, or if you're growing them under straw, add more mulch.
Don't forget to keep an eye on the chooks as summer approaches. Chooks aren't keen on baking hot sun, so provide some shade for them to hide under and hose down the chook shed to keep it cool. Always make sure there's plenty of cool clean water for the chooks to drink.
