Handy tips for October

Spring is here and it's time to get busy.

Now's a great time to plant parsley seedlings and coriander seeds. Basil can wait a few more weeks for warmer weather. Also plant perennial herbs. Some of your established perennial herbs, such as lavender and oregano, may need a prune too if it hasn't already been done. Just remove any old dry flower stems. You can also start to propagate perennials by taking cuttings, or by dividing old plants.

Most vegetables can also be planted now. Leave pumpkins, capsicums and tomatoes a few more weeks until warmer weather has really taken hold.

Annual and perennial weeds are beginning to rear their ugly heads in a huge effort to carpet any bare soil. Control annual weeds by hand until the soil has warmed up a bit, then mulch thickly. 4 inches of mulch will retain moisture during summer and will suppress the growth of most annual weeds to a manageable level. Perennial flat weeds and creeping grasses can be covered with a layer of manure, then newspaper, followed by a thick mulch.
