Handy tips for September

Spring is here and there's plenty to do in the backyard.

The veggie garden should be ready for planting. If not, now's the time to start. You can start to plant many types of seedling already, including cabbage, celery, leeks, lettuce, potatoes and silver beet. Also sow seeds of carrot and swede, and a final crop of broad beans.

Perennial herbs, parsley seedlings and seeds of coriander could also go in.

If you want to plant Tasmanian native plants, you should get them in quickly, though the best time is autumn.

Having been busy with other things (there is life beyond the backyard), my backyard has been badly neglected and there are lots of jobs to complete over the next month. The main one being the creation of a new veggie garden. The area for the new patch has however been mowed short. All it needs is a layer of manure, followed by a thick layer of newspaper. The 4 new timber frames (each 5.5m by 1.5m) go on top of the newspaper. Finally it will be filled with compost and it's ready for planting.

I did manage to plant 6 new deciduous fruit trees last month (2 apples - 'golden delicious' and 'Jonathon', apricot, peach, pear and plum) and they've now received a good mulch of compost. Another batch of compost has been constructed, ready for use in 2 to 3 weeks.

NOTE: Early spring in Tasmania has cool to mild temperatures and may have a late frost.
